PS3 streamings
dear lazyweb,

i just discovered my laptop has no dvd burner (wtf?), and i don't really feel like going back and forth to the PS3 with a usb drive everytime i grab a new episode of something from bittorrent. can anyone recommend a DLNA / uPnP server (pref. already in portage) that i can use to just directly stream video from the laptop? i'm looking at mediatomb but have no idea what else is out there.

I tried Mediatomb and think it is ok. It might not be the silver bullet, but good enough =)

The only thing that annoys me is that the PS3 doesn't support mkv files (you have to re-encode them, at least the sound) or overlay srt (subtitles) like mplayer. I'm thinking about installing Linux on it so I can finally watch whatever I'd like, but that feels like a hassle.
Here is my Mediatomb install tips: http://volatileint.blogspot.com/2008/08/using-playstation3-as-media-center-with_30.html

MT works pretty darn well - PS3 has good codec support, and for whatever it doesn't support, you can set up MT to transcode via VLC. Give it a go!

uShare - possibly in portage but has libdlna bindings and can stream to uPnP devices, XBox360 and PS3

I use for this Coherence since a while.
Its not so future rich, but it streams all support media for the ps3 to it.
Perhaps you like it: https://coherence.beebits.net/

I managed to stream some stuff with mediatomb, but PS3 is quite limited codecs-wise. There are various tutorials[1], but so far I didn't managed to get the transcoding working.

I'd be very interested to hear about your progress, too.

Not without its bugs and flaws, but Mediatomb is the uPnP server I've had the most success with feeding vids to my PS3.

i've had success streaming with vlc, but don't know whether it runs on PS3.
it supports a variety of protocols and formats and can re-encode media on-the-fly.
make sure you increase the cache, if you stream with high bandwidth saturation.

Mediatomb is fantastic!

Especially if you're just watching Xvid avi's

The last time I emerged media tomb the conf files needed to jiggery pokery to make them work with the PS3

If it still does then give me a shout mike at fireburn dot co dot uk and I'll send you my conf files

Go with mediatomb.. I really liked medialink for mac but when I started to stream some high bitrate stuff via gig ethernet to the ps3 it would choke.. Tried mediatomb on linux and have never had a problem.

Not sure if it is in portage, haven't touched Gentoo in a long time, but if it is I'd just stick with mediatomb.

cheers

I second mediatomb

It is in portage and most of the default options work out of the box. The transcoding support is there and works well.

I've had some success with ushare (with the dlna use flag, natch), but it's been weird at times. (I believe) pre-1.1a would choke on funny chars in mp3 files, but it seems better now. Weird "protocol error 500" sometimes. And the lack of divx support on the PS3 makes much of my collection unrenderable unless I'd transcode it.
But it's pretty simple to setup and run.

Try https://coherence.beebits.net/.
They tested their implantation with the PS3.

Fuppes is a nice alternative that has built-in transcoding support. It streams nicely to the XBox360 and PS3.

See here to configure it for use with the PS3
