 | 07:01 pm worked the last six days and have seven more to go. go me. on the plus side, i have my own truck now and don't have to pay for gas. :)
this weekend i'll be in Regina for a two day meeting/training session. we're ditching Leica in favor of Trimble for our GPS equipment. should be interesting, though they were smart enough to schedule a Apache/Husky Oil orientation right between the GPS training and a meeting about overtime pay and expenses so even those of us that will never, ever even come within 10 miles of the Apache field (about 90% of us) can't duck out early. :P yay, three hours hearing about what color hardhat to wear.
monday i go north into the wilderness. should be back by friday.

 | 02:04 am - Northern Exposure I took Melanie north today to see the Flower Fields in Carlsbad. Was quite pretty. We managed to see just about everything mentioned in the article. And we managed to get decently lost in the sweet pea maze. That's what mazes are for. I'm normally deathly allergic to flowers, so I took a half dose of Benadryl before setting out (musn't get sleepy while driving). Either it worked, or else I'm starting to lose this particular allergy. Hopefully the latter. Anyway, I felt fine the whole time. Which is good; both of us were able to enjoy the trip. Pictures follow.

There were some unusual roses, so I just had to capture one:

As we drove back down to San Diego, I was struck by the desire to visit the new Encinitas Branch of the SDCL. The library is a couple of minutes away from Carlsbad. It's just as nice as I've heard, and then some. It is niiiiiice. A mini-slideshow is available on this page. It's up on a hill, so it's got a great view of the Pacific. Wraparound decks and patios are available if you don't want to read inside. Or if you prefer the view but not the weather, the whole west wall is a series of long, undulating transparent frames.
And I even got a book while I was there. Terry Pratchett's Wyrd Sisters.
At this point, it was late afternoon, and the traffic southbound to San Diego was starting to stack up, so we left before it got any worse. Melanie napped the whole way, as she did on the trip north. And I'd brought along my trance/dance tunes, too. Sometimes it's energizing, sometimes it's soothing. Apparently.
Tonight, we watched Roman Holiday, as a fitting end to our excursion. Current Music: The Crystal Method - Sensation (Phase 4 Vinyl Mix)

 | 10:44 pm - kickboxing so Ive taken up kickboxing since Ive been here.
its an extremly super good workout and im drenched in sweat after the 1.5 or so hours.
45 mins is all cardio (running, pushups, situps, etc) 45 mins of actual kickboxing technics, sparring, etc
Tonight my elbows and knees got pwnd by the bags. argh. I think I push myself too much sometimes lol
Also when doing some combinations the teacher/owner said to me 'you boxed before right?'
I havent (but have had few years of tae kwon do experience back in the day)
Good sign I think. I've been invited to the advanced fight class now. =] Which is more sparring woot!
Havent had a chance to do the kempo classes (on opposite days of kickboxing) since Ive been either too tired or too sore. But Im going tommorow.
Then I hope to be at both = 4-5 days a week. Woot!
Havent been to the gym for weights, I think this will keep me fit enough.

 | 12:27 am - old friends
greenblock40 and his sister were in town for their dad's wedding, so my wife and met up with them. i haven't seen andy in awhile, and it's been years since i last saw meghan. good times were had -- laser tag, safari-ing for The Coffee Bean (couldn't find it), and then back to our place for s'more fun, including this really weird card game that involves remembering words.
pick a category ("electricity", "things you shouldn't put in your mouth", "sea creatures", "authors" "body parts", etc.) everyone says one thing related to it, and that word is theirs. you have to remember what they said, because the cards are dealt in sequence, face up, and if you get a matching card with someone else, you have to blurt out their word first, and then you add your accumulated deck to theirs. whoever has the most cards once the deck runs out loses, and picks the next category. oh, and if you are dealt, say, two kings right on your pile, you have to call out your word before anyone else does, or if they beat you to it you eat their stack. yeah, it's totally unfair in a really evil way. sometimes remembering your own word is harder than remembering three or more others. it's the sort of association that drives people into hysterics. and bigger piles of cards.
a great end to a typical day at the library. well, perhaps atypical. i'm reading a novella by steve martin called the pleasure of my company. it follows the humorous mental life and (almost) adventures of a vaguely neurotic, compulsive Californian. i approve.

 | 09:27 pm - on gaming i wasn't planning on playing GTA4 - i've never played any GTA game for that matter - but after reading the Ars Technica review i broke down and got it. unfortunately, broke down is what i got. looks like i've hit some nasty bug that's hitting half the PS3 users out there. I get to watch the first cutscene, drive a car for three seconds, and hardlock the box. subsequent start attempts just sit at a blank screen with "Starting a New Game" in the corner for hours.
so while waiting for a fix, i've gone back to Burnout Paradise, which, by my calculations, is the greatest game i have ever played in the last three years. the fact that they're going to be introducing so much new content over time - game modes, day/night cycles and weather, motorcycles, a whole new city expansion.. - well, i'll still be playing for the next three years. i love this game.
for some reason i pulled FFXII off the shelf tonight and have been trying to figure out what exactly i was doing last time i played over a year ago. probably pulling my hair out. FF RPGs have honestly been a bit of a disappointment to me since FF3 (yes, 6, i know). I know I'm going to get flack for this, but honestly i thought FF7 sucked donkey nuts. 8 was awful. i didn't play 9. 10 was also poo but i didn't get to play much of it, so i while i have to admit it's within the realm of possibility that it may have slowly struggled to its shaky poo covered knees and done a handstand at the end, i don't think so.
luckily, there are places like Level 5, putting out release after release of console RPG perfection. Dark Cloud, Dark Cloud 2, Rogue Galaxy, Dragon Quest 8, Jeanne d'Arc, and now the upcoming White Knight Chronicles... oh yes.
there's no comparison. in FFXII to get a new sword you run around the countryside killing various random beasties (who were probably minding their own business, enjoying a nice leisurely stroll in the sunshine until some lunatic came screaming over the hill swinging a sword and chopped them into little bits), pick up said bits, and try to sell them to a store in town. Repeat 1500 times until you get enough money for your shiny new WoMD. In Rogue Galaxy you take your old sword and any other old sword you happen to have handy, and simply feed them both to the talking frog who inexplicably lives in your backpack, wait three seconds, and he'll puke out an upgraded and combined (though probably slightly less shiny) copy of the two. No wanton destruction of innocent forrest creatures, no constant level grinding over and over again til you can afford the equipment you need, no more antagonizing whether or not to sell that awesome ice dagger you found that no one is using right now but will undoubtedly be essential if you hit a fire level sometime in the future... maybe. Just a little purple frog vomit, and go about saving the world.
now i have a really craving for playing RG and DQ8 again. I'll still stick FFXII through to the end though. Everyone says it's an incredible game. Maybe I just haven't seen the good stuff yet.

 | 10:46 am - party time excellent! So, played at Gabbos last night, did well. Last time I did I couldnt setup my final scratch, so I played old cds on old shitty twindeck cd players.
This time they has a pioneer 1000 and a Denon, god I hate denon cd players.. AND hate burning/labeling cds.
Good times.
Off to winnipeg this afternoon with my friend Krystal. We sorta knew each other from when I lived before. Started chatting again since Ive been back and hung out a couple times. Just the two of us going.. kinda weird.. but still going to be kick ass. She's pretty awesome.
Transformers tonight, shopping, radio, then NV, Noir and the Aoki show saturdays.
Stop by the parents sunday after for a quick visit then home.
Going to be a long, busy weekend!
